What is the Friends of Thirtover Place?
The Friends of Thirtover Place is a group of people interested in the well-being of the house and grounds.
Who are the Friends?
The Friends consists of both present members of Girlguiding UK and those who have never been a member, active members and former members, people living both inside and outside Berkshire and are aged 18 to 118.
Why does the Friends of Thirtover Place exist?
The group was set up in 1992 by a group of like-minded Guiders and former Guiders to give Thirtover Place the little (or big!) luxuries which could not perhaps be otherwise justified or afforded when managing such a large estate.
How do they help Thirtover Place?
Friends help in several ways. They raise money for non-essential items, such as pinic tables, purchasing of souvenirs for sale to visitors, better quality craft facilties and the construction of the recently completed camp fire circle. They also hold two Maintenance Days each year when they carry out small maintenance tasks on the house and grounds, such as spring cleaning, minor repairs and grounds maintenance, all of a simple but worthwhile nature, as well as monthly working parties.
Where are the Friends?
Members come from all around the UK, but the majority of their activities are based at Thirtover Place in West Berkshire.
When do the Friends meet?
The Friends hold a variety of events throughout the year, and in recent years these have included a summer event (sometimes a supper or barbecue), a winter event (around Christmas), a biennial quiz (sold to anyone and everyone!), nostalgia evenings, treasure hunts, book fairs, colouring competitions (for Brownies and Rainbow Guides) and Maintenance Days. Friends are kept up to date by an annual newsletter and are also provided with information on up-coming events as necessary.
How do I join the Friends?
Individuals pay a minimum (no maximum!) membership fee of £10 per year. For groups and families the minimum fee is £15. Contact the Secretary by e-mailing friends@thirtoverplace.org.
